Getting Started with Your Ledger Device
Welcome to your Ledger device! This guide will help you set up your hardware wallet, secure your digital assets, and start managing cryptocurrencies safely. Whether you are new to crypto or upgrading your security, following these steps carefully ensures a smooth and secure start.
1. Unboxing and Inspecting Your Device
When you open your Ledger package, you should find the device, a USB cable, recovery phrase sheets, and any accessories included. Before proceeding, verify that the package is sealed and shows no signs of tampering. Ledger devices are designed with security in mind: your private keys are generated and stored on the device itself, and your recovery phrase will always be generated internally. The device will never arrive with a pre-set recovery phrase.
Take a moment to inspect your device, ensure it powers on correctly, and prepare it for setup.
2. Power On and Begin Setup
Connect the Ledger device to your computer or mobile device using the USB cable. When it turns on, follow the instructions on its screen to select your language and begin setup. The device interface is controlled by physical buttons, requiring manual confirmation for every action. This ensures that all sensitive operations, such as sending funds, are verified directly by you.
3. Create a New Wallet
Select the option to create a new wallet. Your Ledger device will generate a unique recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). This 24-word phrase is the most important piece of information for accessing your assets. Write each word down carefully on the provided recovery sheets, in the correct order.
Important reminders:
Never take a photo or store your recovery phrase digitally.
Never share it with anyone.
Keep it offline in a secure location.
Your recovery phrase is your ultimate backup. If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore your wallet using this phrase.
4. Confirm Your Recovery Phrase
Once written down, the device will ask you to confirm several words from your recovery phrase. This step ensures that you copied it accurately. After confirmation, your recovery phrase becomes the master key to your wallet. Many users store it in fireproof or waterproof containers for additional protection.
5. Set a PIN Code
Next, set a PIN code for your device. The PIN protects your wallet from unauthorized physical access. Choose a code that is memorable but not easily guessed. If the wrong PIN is entered multiple times, the device will erase itself for security purposes. You can then restore your wallet using your recovery phrase.
The PIN secures your device, while the recovery phrase secures your assets, creating two layers of protection.
6. Install the Companion App and Add Accounts
Install the Ledger companion application on your computer or mobile device. The app allows you to:
Install applications for different cryptocurrencies
Add accounts to manage your assets
Send and receive funds
Monitor balances securely
Connect your device to the app and follow the on-screen instructions. Add the cryptocurrencies you want to manage and install the respective apps on your Ledger device. All transactions require manual confirmation on the device itself, keeping your private keys offline and protected.
7. Explore Security Features and Updates
Ledger devices offer advanced security features, such as optional passphrases and additional verification layers. Regularly check for firmware and application updates to maintain security and performance. Staying up-to-date ensures that your device remains protected against new vulnerabilities and supports the latest cryptocurrencies.
8. You’re Ready to Start
With your Ledger device set up, your recovery phrase securely stored, and your accounts added, you are ready to manage your crypto safely. Your Ledger wallet keeps your private keys offline, giving you control and peace of mind. By following these steps, you have taken an essential step toward securing your digital assets and participating in the world of cryptocurrencies confidently.
